The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has introduced new increases in grant payments, providing much-needed financial relief to vulnerable members of society. As of October, SASSA has started distributing these increased payments, ensuring that beneficiaries receive their grants smoothly and on time. SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi recently shared details about these changes, the improved payment process, and what beneficiaries can expect moving forward.
SASSA Grant Payment Increase Breakdown
Starting with the old age pension, SASSA has slightly increased the grant amount for recipients. Individuals under 75 years of age now receive R2,190, up from R2,180. For those aged 75 and older, the payment has risen from R2,200 to R2,210. While this increase may appear small just R10 per month it is part of SASSA’s ongoing efforts to provide financial assistance despite limited budget allocations.
Other grants that have seen this modest increase include:
- Disability Grant: Receives an additional R10.
- Care Dependency Grant: Also increased by R10.
- War Veterans Grant: Recipients receive an additional R10 as well.
Notably, the Child Support Grant did not receive an increase in this adjustment. The latest increases follow an earlier adjustment in April 2024, where other grant categories were also raised.
Why the R10 Increase?
Many may wonder why the grant increases have been capped at R10, especially during a time of rising living costs. Paseka Letsatsi explained that while the increase seems minimal, it is determined by broader budgetary constraints managed by the Department of Social Development and National Treasury. SASSA’s role is to administer these funds based on the policies and budget set by the government.
The total budget allocated for social grants in South Africa stands at R265 billion, a substantial amount meant to support millions of people across various grant categories. After carefully considering economic conditions and other factors, the National Treasury decides how much each grant can be increased.
SASSA Payment Process Improvements
SASSA has implemented a staggered payment schedule to ensure that the grant distribution process runs smoothly and that there are no overwhelming crowds at payment points. Payments are made over several days to avoid congestion, especially for the elderly and disabled.
The schedule spreads payments from the 2nd to the 4th of each month. According to Letsatsi, the primary goal of this approach is to prevent vulnerable individuals from getting caught up in long lines alongside younger, more able-bodied beneficiaries, such as those collecting Child Support Grants.
Addressing Issues at Cash Pay Points
In recent months, some beneficiaries in rural areas raised concerns about the closure of cash pay points, which left many with no local access to their grants. SASSA has responded by reevaluating its decisions and is working to ensure that services remain accessible in areas where infrastructure is lacking. For people living in remote locations, travelling long distances to collect grants can be challenging, with some spending up to R300 on transportation.
Letsatsi emphasized that SASSA is committed to providing services closer to beneficiaries in these areas, ensuring that they do not have to spend a significant portion of their grant on transportation costs.
Encouragement to Use Bank Cards for Transactions
SASSA has been urging beneficiaries to use their bank cards for transactions instead of withdrawing all their funds in cash at once. This measure reduces the theft risk and allows recipients to withdraw money when necessary without carrying large amounts of cash. The card can be used at various retail stores and ATMs, making it a safer and more convenient option for many.
