The Queensland Government has recently introduced an exciting initiative for those considering greener transportation options. Starting September 23, 2024, Queensland residents will be eligible for rebates on approved e-bikes and e-scooters. This initiative is part of the broader Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Strategy, aimed at promoting the use of environmentally friendly vehicles to reduce emissions and alleviate traffic congestion. This new scheme follows the conclusion of the state’s electric vehicle rebate earlier this month and offers residents rebates of up to $500 on selected e-mobility devices.
Rebate Details
- $500 rebate for e-bicycles, including cargo e-bikes.
- $200 rebate for e-scooters.
Residents keen on participating should act swiftly, as the program operates on a first-come, first-served basis. With only $1 million allocated for the initiative, the funds might be quickly depleted.
Eligibility Requirements
- Purchase Date: Only purchases made on or after September 23, 2024, qualify for the rebate. Retroactive rebates for earlier purchases are not available.
- Eligible Applicants: The rebate is limited to individual Queensland residents aged 18 or older. Businesses and sole traders are not eligible.
- Retailer Requirements: Purchases must be made through a registered retailer, which includes Queensland-based physical retailers or Australian online stores with a valid Australian Business Number (ABN).
Eligibility Criteria for E-Bikes
To qualify for the e-bike rebate, the following requirements must be met:
- The e-bike must be an Electrically Power-Assisted Cycle (EPAC) with a maximum continuous rated power of 250 watts.
- The power output must automatically reduce when the speed reaches 6 km/h.
- The electric assistance must cut off completely once the bike reaches a speed of 25 km/h.
Eligibility Criteria for E-Scooters
For the e-scooter rebate, the device must meet these conditions:
- The e-scooter should be designed for use by one person.
- It must have an electric motor that ceases to function once the scooter reaches 25 km/h.
Limitations and Further Details
The rebate scheme includes several limitations:
- Only one rebate per individual is allowed.
- A maximum of three rebates per household is permitted, allowing families to benefit while ensuring fair distribution.
- The total rebate fund is capped at $1 million, with an additional $1 million recently added due to anticipated high demand for e-bikes and e-scooters.
Other States and Territories Offering Rebates
Queensland is not the only state in Australia offering rebates for e-bikes and e-scooters. Tasmania was the first Australian state to introduce such a scheme, offering:
- Up to 12% of the purchase price as a rebate.
- A maximum rebate of $500 for standard e-bikes.
- A rebate of up to $1,000 for cargo e-bikes.
In South Australia, two local councils are also offering rebates on electric bikes. Residents in the City of Holdfast Bay, covering areas like Glenelg, Brighton, Seacliff, and Hove, can receive:
- $200 rebate for standard e-bikes and regular cargo bikes.
- $300 rebate for electric cargo bikes.
