5 mistakes to avoid for your office desk

Your office desk is more than a place where you keep your laptop. For many professionals and entrepreneurs, it is where they spend 8 to 10 hours every day, make important decisions, speak to clients, handle money and build their careers. Yet, the desk often becomes the most ignored space in the office. Here are five common mistakes worth correcting.

1. Sitting with your back directly towards the door

Your chair should ideally allow you to have some awareness of the entrance rather than sitting completely unaware of what is happening behind you.If changing the desk position is impossible, particularly in a corporate office, use a high-back chair and keep the area behind you clean and stable. The principle is simple: your working position should feel supported, not exposed.

2. Keeping dead, broken or non-working things on the desk

That pen that stopped working three months ago. The charger with exposed wires. A clock without a battery. A broken desk accessory you keep promising to repair.Either repair it or remove it.Your primary working space should represent things that function. This is especially important for entrepreneurs because the desk becomes a symbolic extension of everyday professional activity.

3. Allowing papers, bills and random objects to keep piling up

A busy desk and a cluttered desk are two different things.Pending invoices, visiting cards, old coffee cups, loose papers and unopened documents should not permanently occupy your working area. Create designated places for pending, completed and important work. You don’t need an Instagram-perfect desk. You need a desk where you can find what you need without searching for ten minutes.

4. Keeping a dustbin directly under your working desk

This is one arrangement I generally prefer avoiding. The space immediately around your working position should remain clean and open. If possible, move the dustbin slightly away from where you sit rather than keeping waste directly underneath your desk throughout the working day.And irrespective of Vastu, empty it regularly. A beautiful office with an overflowing dustbin underneath the founder’s desk defeats the purpose.

5. Keeping too many remedies, crystals and religious objects

This may sound surprising coming from Vastu, but more remedies do not automatically mean better energy.Five crystals, three pyramids, two deity idols, a Yantra, lucky bamboo and seven other “prosperity objects” can eventually become another form of clutter.Keep only what has a clear purpose for you. If you keep a spiritual object, treat it respectfully rather than allowing it to disappear between chargers and paperwork.
