Tamil Nadu Announces New Welfare Measures Ahead of Diwali: Subsidised Grocery Kits, Auto Fare Revision and More

The Tamil Nadu government has announced several welfare measures and public service updates ahead of Diwali. One initiative offers a special grocery kit containing 10 essential items for ₹200 through cooperative stores and Amudham outlets. The package includes pulses, tamarind, coriander, garlic, dried chillies, mustard, cumin and fennel.

The government has also revised auto-rickshaw fares after around 13 years. The reported daytime fare is ₹50 for the first 1.8 km, followed by ₹25 for every additional kilometre. Waiting charges are ₹1 per minute, with separate night and hill-area rates.

Another scheme aims to provide 10,000 milch cows to rural women, backed by a reported allocation of ₹57 crore. Priority will be given to women with less than one acre of land, widows, destitute women, transgender persons and women with disabilities.

The state is also planning additional festival buses and online ticket booking through the TNSTC app. A proposal to supply wheat flour through ration shops at ₹15 per kg has reportedly received central approval but is not yet operational.
