Selected stenographers assist officers by recording dictation in shorthand and converting it into typed documents. The eligibility requirement is generally Class 12 pass. The age limit mentioned in the video is 18–30 years for Grade C and 18–27 years for Grade D, with age relaxation for reserved categories.

The computer-based examination covers General Intelligence, General Awareness and English Language. Candidates who qualify must also pass a stenography skill test. Learning shorthand may take around six to seven months of regular practice.
